Finca La Esperanza is a family-owned farm and part of La Palma & El Tucan's (LPET) Neighbors & Crops program, a program dedicated to a sustainable Coffee Relationship Model that helps small-scale farmers produce top quality coffee with traditional Colombian varieties, such as Caturra, Castillo, Colombia, Typica, and Bourbon.
LPET have identified more than 100 coffee-growing families located within a 10km radius of our farm. It is through these neighbors that they are able to buy and process exceptional coffee cherries while controlling every step of the production line.
This program is designed to offer their neighboring coffee- growing families various benefits (monetary and non-monetary) that help LPET to incentivize them to become an active part of this industry.
One such 'neighbor' is Yaneth Buitron, a 33 year coffee producer who lives with her son Esteban and her mother Ines on their farm, “La Esperanza”. Located in El Carmen, Pitalito , this farm has a total area of 1.9 Ha from which 1.61 are planted with 25,000 coffee trees.
Yaneth has been working with coffee for more than 19 years as a family tradition, where she helped and learned from her father. Eventually she inherits the farm and since then all the hard work relapses on her and Esteban. However, once she joined the Neighbors & Crop program, a lot of burden was removed while financial stability added up.
La Esperanza’s coffee is selectively hand harvested and then delivered to LPET wet mill. Janneth Buitron's La Esperanza Lot 31 harvest is processed in a locally known method of 'Lactico.' This kind of fermentation is classified as ‘Anaerobic’ as oxygen has minimal interaction with the cherry. Once the cherries arrive at the mill, they are hand sorted and placed in sealed tanks. With no oxygen involved, bacteria feed on carbohydrates present in the mucilage favoring a higher concentration of Lactic Acid, creating a unique profile of the resulting cup.
Through this relationship we had with La Palma & El Tucan since our 6th Anniversary in 2019, we have been supplied with various astounding coffees, such as the Gesha and Sidra. We are happy that for our 10th Anniversary, we are again able to work with La Palma & El Tucan. Finca La Esperanza is our first purchase of this experimental lot of the Neighbors and Crops program and we see this being one of the crowd favourite too. Tasting is believing!
