From the same producer duo where we have recently introduced mouth-watering Colombians; Los Tres Mosqueteros, San Pascual and Carlos Alberto Ulchur, we purchased for the second time in 2 years - Finca Loma Verde, also from Pedro and Leonardo!
Pedro Jr. and Leonardo Henao are first-generation coffee producers, gaining entry into the industry after spending time working with exporters and travelling to various farms throughout Colombia. Pedro Jr. is the son of Pedro Echavarria, a 3rd generation coffee producer whose family owned Cafe de Santa Barbara for more than 3 decades. Pedro Jr. through Pergamino, has become more deeply involved in the workings of the farm, taking the already high-quality coffee to new heights, through experimentation in processing and increased monitoring and control of every stage of production. Leonardo is the director of coffee at Pergamino exporters and has worked with Dutch Colony through Mercanta for a number of years. By working with small scale producers, Pergamino, Mercanta and us can ensure a better price for producers, as well as highlighting the work that small coffee farmers in Antioquia, Colombia are doing to improve the quality of their coffee.
Loma Verde’s coffees are selectively hand-harvested, before being brought up to the highest part of the road using cable cars. After being sorted, Loma Verde dries the coffee, first in raised beds under shade. The coffee is spread thinly on screens encased in wooden boxes and is regularly turned to ensure even drying. Next, the coffee cherry is moved out into the sunlight for 3 days until it contains the correct level of moisture; before being moved into the silo for another 48-72 hours to rest. Here, quality coffees are brought from all 5 of the Santa Barbara farms to be naturally processed; whereas their washed coffees are taken to La Joyeria, the farm’s primary wet mill, and its production is kept separate from the other farms.
Bárbara Estate employs 60 people all year round, who on average earn 30% above the minimum wage. Half of these also receive free housing within the farm for themselves and their families. A further1,200 pickers are hired during the main harvest, comprised mainly of farmers from around the Santa Bárbara Estate who pick coffee to supplement their income. Workers are generally long-term employees and have been with the company for more than 10 years. The Santa Bárbara Estate also runs an extensive scholarship and financial aid program for worker’s children as well as helping long-standing employees to acquire their own piece of land upon retirement.
We are always excited to introduce new and delicious Colombians from the farm of Pedro and Leonardo, fresh from 2024 harvest! From Antioquia, Colombia to Singapore, this delicious coffee that you are about to enjoy is only made possible through the story of relationship, coffee and people. This is a coffee that Brew Moments and Inspiring Relationships.
