With nearly 700,000 coffee producers, around 70% of whom are smallholder farmers, the country's coffees are shaped by a unique combination of high-altitude growing conditions, rich volcanic soils, and meticulous post-harvest processing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lot comes from the Gatuyaini Coffee Factory, located in Gatuyaini village just north of Othaya town in Nyeri County. In Kenya, a coffee \"factory\" refers to a wet mill and collection point where cherries from surrounding smallholder farms are received, sorted and processed. Gatuyaini has been part of the Othaya Farmers' Cooperative Society (FCS) since the factory was established in 1969.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe coffee is grown at approximately 1,891 metres above sea level, where the combination of high elevation, cool temperatures and consistent rainfall allows the cherries to mature slowly. The region's characteristic bright red soils are rich in nutrients, while farmers enrich their plots with manure, compost, coffee pulp and green manure to maintain soil health and fertility.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the cup, Gatuyaini delivers the kind of lively, fruit-driven character we look forward to from Nyeri.
