Building Dutch Colony – One People and One Cup of Good Coffee at a Time

Building Dutch Colony – One People and One Cup of Good Coffee at a Time

The inspiration to write the first article for our brand new blog and website comes after watching the back to back defeat of World Cup teams that have with them world class footballers like Ronaldo and Messi.  Superstars in their own rights but not enough to build a team, it makes us reminisce of our growth thus far.

Babe Ruth once famously said, “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” So much truth in this powerful statement and we won’t be here today if not for a bunch of misfits, that comes together with a shared common goal.

Dutch Colony turns 5 just in March 2018 and today, fully owns three retail shops (Four, if not for the closure of our beloved shop at The Grandstand's Farmer’s Market!) and a state of the art roasting facility that come with a coffee school – Katalyst Coffee Academy. All of these would not have been possible if not for a great team, a majority of them whom started off as a casual barista then, clueless as to where this company is heading in the future but holding to the words of the co-owners then, “Slowly but surely, we will get there. For now, let’s built the foundation first and the foundation is our people and of course, our coffee!” Just like a coffee flower that blossoms to become beautiful cherries, these same misfits and casual barista are today, holding key appointment roles within the company – from a barista to a Business Development Manager, Coffee Roaster, Trainer and even Head of Store. Our people grow and so does the coffee quality and standards.

Since 2015, Dutch Colony has won back-to-back coffee roasting awards in the Australian International Coffee Awards. Competing alongside more competent and established coffee roasters from all over the world, our coffee has received silver and bronze medals in the espresso and cappuccino category. This is a testimony of our strength as a coffee roaster of caliber and quality and the gold medal is not far from reach. The last 5 years, we have also produced champions, winners and finalist in the nationals and regional competition like Aeropress Championship, Cup Tasters, Barista & Brewing championship as well as being 2nd runner up in Asia Barista Duo challenge as recent as 2018. If this is not building people through coffee, then we do not know what is…..

Founder Meidia Tamboto have recently mentioned, we didn’t come this far to only come this far, as such plans is underway for what we like to achieve five years from today. Having a strong foundation will allow us to built a structure now, and building a structure we will, a coffee empire big and strong to provide more for both our loyal employees as well as the faithful regulars that have been with us since day one.  Pray for us and support this local company, as we built Dutch Colony – one people and one cup of good coffee at a time.
