Started by a close-knit Ethiopian coffee-producing family, Sookoo produces and exports high-quality coffee from some of the most well-known regions in the world. Currently, the company is led by Ture Ware and manages washing stations in both Uraga and Shaakkisso Woredas.
Having grown up in the region, Ture began working as an export and farm manager within his family’s business. Today, Ture manages Sookoo, a sustainable organization working with many producers and the environment to export high-quality coffee throughout the world. Ture and the Sookoo team care deeply about traceability and the producers supplying cherries to the mill. The company provides pre-harvest loans to the producers to ensure yields and quality are maintained. Roads and schools have been constructed by Sookoo to help improve the coffee-producing community. Thanks to these values, and Sookoo’s dedication to assisting producers with technical challenges in addition to offering agricultural training – a future is being created for coffee in this region.
For this particular coffee, 23 smallholder individual farmers have contributed to the lot; typically growing coffee in conjunction with raising livestock. Producers in this region face challenges, with a lack of clean water and poor soil conservation. To ameliorate these threats, producers are beginning to work together and educate each other on different methods to conserve water and promote soil health.
To improve the biodiversity and climate of the area – indigenous trees are being planted in this region. This also helps create a microclimate for the coffee and provide nutrients to the soil. Well known to the Raro Nansebo where these smallholders grow coffee, is the famous Laayyoo tree. With its deep roots and nutrient- rich leaves, the tree help improves the condition of the soil for farming. Soil health has gradually been improving thanks to the efforts from the producers with the application of manure and coffee husks to the top layer of soil. This healthy base allows for a nutritious source of minerals for coffee trees to produce high-quality cherries.
The last we had a good harvest of this coffee was back in February 2022, and the team are excited to work with it again this 2025. One of the cleanest Ethiopian naturals by far, packed with loads of heavy floral, dark berries and citrus, bergamot tones and definitely one of the sweetest ever that we have purchased and roasted. We can see this quickly in every home-barista brew table and in the menu offering of many of our wholesale partners.
