The Rwenzori mountains in southwestern Uganda, known as the Mountains of the Moon, feature glacial-capped peaks that serveas a source for rivers, including a Nile tributary. These conditions, along with a high altitude in the region that ranges from 1,300 to 1,900 metres above sea level, providing ideal conditions for coffee production due to the perfect balance of wet and dry seasons and fertile soil. The varietal of Tipica, SL14 and SL28 are planted here, which thrives in such environment.

Rwanda's Rwenzori region is known for crafting superb natural/dry process coffees. These beans which are harvested at high altitudes and milled within the same vicinity of the farms, fetches a higher price and twice the standard price is paid to Ugandan Arabica growers for their "drugar" crop. Prior to this, many Ugandan coffees comprised of low-grade drugar beans, and growers found it hard to profit from their harvests. Thanks to efficient receiving and milling facilities, coffee can now be gathered, washed, and exported at optimum quality. The coffee was processed via the natural method. In this case, ripe cherries are dried on the patio without having been pulped, producing a sweet, fruity coffee. Once the beans reach the desired humidity level, they are dry-milled to remove the dried pulp and parchment and then sorted and screened for export.

Every year, Dutch Colony strives to source, cup and purchase the best tasting African coffees  - mainly for the purpose of meeting our requirements in ensuring we meet the demands out there. In the 10 years, we have purchased coffees from farms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda but this is our first purchase of anything from Uganda and we are excited to showcase Ibero Rwenzori in your coffee mugs. Get ready for a sensorial journey that will tease your tastebud.
